Dover Beach

~I remember we studied the poem Dover Beach in high school, and I couldn't help thinking of this while on the ferry across the English Channel! ~

Poem: Dover Beach by Matthew Arnold (1867)
The sea is calm tonight, The tide is full, the moon lies fair
Upon the straits; on the French coast the light
Gleams and is gone; the cliffs of England stand,
Glimmering and vast, out in the tranquil bay.
Come to the window, sweet is the night air!
Only, from the long line of spray
Where the sea meets the moon-blanched land,
Listen! you hear the grating roar
Of pebbles which the waves draw back, and fling,
At their return, up the high strand,
Begin, and cease, and then again begin,
With tremulous cadence slow, and bring
The eternal note of sadness in.

Crossing the road (Boys Only!)

08/04/2008
Journaling: How did the chicken cross the road? ...by using the underground walkway from the Champs-Elysees, of course! Only we didn’t know about that.. We stood there pondering how to get across the road to inspect the Arc de Triomphe a little closer. After a few minutes we already decided that everyone under the Arc were surely going to sleep there, because traffic wasn’t letting up. But then we found the walkway...luckily...

Arriving in Paris (Pretty in the City)

Ons hotel was ook net so 'n blok of wat vanaf Moulin Rouge.

Ek het hierdie bladsy vir 'n speedscrap by
Stuff to Scrap gemaak, met die lieflike Pretty in the City van Christy Skaggs.

~We got on a train in Germany on the morning of 07/04/08, and started the long journey to Paris. We even saw snow along the way! We arrived in Paris at about 21:30, and had a lot of fun searching for and on the underground trains! Then we got off at Blanche station, overlooking the (in)famous Moulin Rouge! What a sight... Our hotel was also just a block or so from Moulin Rouge.

I made this page using the lovely Pretty in the City by Christy Skaggs, in a fun speed scrap hosted at Stuff to Scrap. ~

The Blue Bag (Kick Back & Relax)

My ma s'n, wat so swaar gelaai was met waterbottels, kamera's, serpe en ander dinge, dat my pa dit meestal moes dra.
Journaling: We visited Heidelberg, Germany today. Once again a very cold day, but the main joke of the day was...The Blue Bag...And especially the fact that my dad was mostly caught carrying it! To his big dismay I might add...
~We were very excited to see Heidelberg, Germany, because we live in Heidelberg, South Africa. Nearly got frostbite again, but it was nice to see! We ate at a schnitzel haus, where you could choose from more than 101 schnitzels! The biggest joke was the blue handbag. My mom's, filled to the brim with water bottles, cameras and scarves. It ended up being so heavy that my dad had to carry it most of the time! ~

Hollywood and beyond...

~Here are two non-Europe LO's and another Rome one that I made in between...~

I had so much fun running up and down Hollywood Boulevard. My favourite star of all was obviously Marilyn Monroe’s and needless to say, I had to pose with it! I couldn’t believe that I was actually in Hollywood, seeing the Kodak theatre with the hand-and footprints, Walk of Fame and Hollywood sign.

Rothenburg

Journaling:
05/04/2008 Today Hannes and Ina took us to see the old city of Rothenburg. What a lot of history! I loved the half-timber buildings that could be seen everywhere. We even went to the war museum, where we had a look at the “folterkamer” - scary! But all in all it was an enjoyable day!

Biggest free hanging Cuckoo Clock

~Here's a photo of 03/04/08, when we went on a cruise on the Rhine. We visited a few towns next to the river, one of which was St Goar, where we saw the biggest free hanging cuckoo clock.~

Journaling:

02/04/2008 Today we visited Koblenz, where the Rhine and Moselle rivers meet. We took the Altstadt Express, and had a scenic drive through the town. We also visited Cochem, where we took their version of the train as well. It was quite funny, with even a bell ringing when you get on and off!

Tight Squeeze (Oh My - Mel Hains)

Journaling:

01/04/2008 Today we started exploring the Rhine Valley. We went by coach from Assmanshausen to the Niederwald Monument. Then we took the CABLE CAR downhill to Rudesheim. The funniest part was that my dad ended up sitting on top of me, because he had to jump into the car at the last moment .. and the car actually only seats 2 people! The ride down was scary (as always) but it still was a beautiful view! We spent the rest of the day in Rudesheim, drinking beer, and looking around the town said to be one of the most visited places in Germany.

The lounge

Journaling:
On the long journey to Germany we relaxed in the lounge right at the back of the coach. Very comfy!! 31/03/2008

~On this day, we got on the bus early morning, and started the long journey to the English channel, where we got onto the train (bus and all!!) to travel underneath the ocean. After that we travelled through a piece of France and Belgium to Assmannshausen, Germany. We relaxed in the lounge at the back of the coach all the way..~

Hard Rock - Rome Style!

Journaling:
29/03/2008 I always have to visit the Hard Rock Cafe wherever I go. Rome’s version was definitely something else! Like the rest of this beautiful city, cherubs made a very prominent appearance. I loved the twist Hard Rock gave to the cherub theme! Oh, and the food was sublime!

Picnic (Bloom)

Journaling:
Today was set aside especially for a picnic in the Borghese gardens. I bought a picnic basket from GiNa and walked to the gardens, where I just enjoyed my lunch on the grass and relaxed after an action packed week in Rome.

~ Long before I went to Europe, I decided that I want to have a picnic in Rome. I then searched around on the internet and found that the Borghese Gardens would be the best spot for a picnic. I also read that the restaurant GiNa's is close to the gardens and packs the nicest picnic baskets. You pick your own sandwich and drinks, and then you also get water, coffee and desert! ~

Am Freezing, Want Gelato (Moody Grunge)

Ek was so opgewonde oor die "walking tour".

Journaling:

27/03/2008 Today I went on a walking tour in Rome. Too bad that it was raining..and I was therefore freezing.. The weather didn't lessen my appetite for GELATO and luckily I had my very big red umbrella handy! The tour visited the Colosseum (inside!), Roman Forum, Trevi Fountain and various other piazzas, plazas and places.

~ I was so excited about my walking tour! Not even the rain could dampen my spirit. To think I was INSIDE the Colosseum! I just can't describe the feeling..

I used Mel Hains' kit Moody Grunge for this page.~

100% percent girl - Christy Skaggs

Hier is my bladsy van 23/03/08.

Journaling:

23/03/2009 Pierre & Yolanda took me to see Painswick today. Although I nearly froze to death (nothing new there), I really enjoyed this quaint town. We saw the church and graveyard, with interesting tree-lined walkways, and were fascinated by the low entrances to the houses. Something that struck me was the beautiful daffodils in all the windowsills. This was a nice look into a few centuries ago!

~Here's my page for 23/03/08.  The journaling says it all.  They took me to Bristol Airport to fly to Rome.

I used Christy Skaggs' kit 100% girl - what a versatile kit!~

Inside the Vatican Museums - Bloom (OMAAT)

Die LO is met One Memory At a Time se nuwe kit Bloom.

Journaling: 25/03/08: Today I explored the Vatican Museums. I have never seen so many diverse sculptures and strange artifacts! There wasn’t a single square cm that wasn’t bursting with colour and shouting OPULENCE!!

~ Here is another page of my European Adventure... A year ago today, I explored the Vatican Museums and St Peter's Cathedral.  This LO uses One Memory At a Time's newest kit Bloom. ~

When life gives you lemons - Mel Hains

Hier's 'n bladsy met When Life Gives You Lemons(wat 'n fantastiese naam) slegs by iscrapbook beskikbaar.

Hierdie bladsy is deel van 'n reeks wat ek probeer maak - ek was presies 'n jaar terug op vakansie in Europa.  Nou wil ek elke dag 'n bladsy scrap van laasjaar se vakansie.  Hier is my eerste bier in Europa - in goeie ou Rome! En dit was 'n "blonde" ene.  Die foto's is in 'n pub naby Santa Maria Maggiori geneem, op 'n baie reënerige Maandagaand. Prima Birra beteken Eerste Bier in Italiaans (ek dink!!).

~ Bet you didn't know, but I'm a new PERMANENT guest CT for the wonderfully talented Mel Hains!! I get to work with all the kits I want to, when I want to... Yes, now I sound like a spoilt little girl. But I am! So deal with it LOL...

Here's a LO with her new kit When Life Gives You Lemons (what a fantastic name!) available only at iscrapbook

This LO is part of a series I'm trying - exactly a year ago I visit Europe for a month long holiday. I want to scrap one page per day for the next month... Here is my first beer in Europe, in good old Rome! And it was a "blonde" one. This was in a pub close to Santa Maria Maggiori, on a very rainy Monday evening.
(Prima Birra means First Beer in Italian..I think!) ~
